How do you tell the difference between a lack bear and a brown bear?

It is important because one will eat you to death and the other will lick you to death?

I came across another example of this recently which I read of how a National Park in the USA got a very serious message across to their client in a light hearted way.

This is what the sign post said. In the light of the rising frequency of serious accidents between humans and black bears, the Montana Department of Fish & Game is advising hikers, hunters and fisherman to take extra precautions and keep alert for black bears while in the field. We advise that outdoorsmen should wear small noisy bells on the clothing as warning, so as not to unexpectantly startle bears.

We would also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of a close encounter with a bear. Additionally, it is a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should be able to recognise the difference between black bear and its more ferocious cousin, the grizzly bear.

While the tracks for the two species of bear are quite similar, black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. On the other hand, grizzly dung has little bells in it and it smells like pepper.
