It’s a Myth - Boomers are wealthy.

Originally published in Rebootology

Rather than downsizing, many empty nesters are snapping up second homes in lifestyle villages.

For instance, many lifestyle villages offer custom homes with garages as huge as 100sqms, to place to park RVs, boats and caravans. Increasingly, “retirement isn’t all about being practical,” Ken Dychtwald, founder and chief executive of the consulting firm Age Wave, commented earlier this year.
Such stories of big spending have dominated popular perceptions of boomers in their later years.
But many boomers couldn’t be further from living that dream. While some benefit from multiple income streams, members of this sandwich generation often are saddled simultaneously with their children’s mortgage guarantees [ Bank of Mum and Dad ] and health expenses for their ageing parents. Some have to leave their jobs to be full-time caregivers. About 1 in 5 workers between ages 45 and 74 had either taken leave or quit a job to care for an adult family member in the past five years.

On top of that, there’s a mounting number of grey divorce couples who, in their 50's and 60's, suddenly have to divide assets they had counted on. Given boomers’ longer life expectancy, that translates into a lot more bills for many more years.

Savings aren’t helping them much. Even the median savings of just $50,000, is about $250,000 short of their goal. And plans to keep their jobs longer might not work. In the same study, 49 percent of retired respondents said they left the workforce earlier than expected, frequently because of health problems or an employer’s decision.

Boomers know that their financial situation is more precarious than others think. Many boomers believe they will "outlive their money.”

Hence the creation of Rebootology - a community of people who want to be engaged and maybe top up their retirement funds by helping business achieve more… let me know if you want to know more.

Just add tell me more in the comments.

Of all the bullshit I have read…

Originally published in Rebootology

Michael Masterson is one of my favourite authors in the Self Help and Motivation area. He writes the Early To Rise newsletter and you can subscribe to his Michael Masterson Journal that livens up many a Saturday morning for me.

In the never ending search to become more effective so I can spend more time enjoying life, I read the thoughts of Masterson hoping for a gem that will add enjoyment and a few free hours to my day. You know, that extra half an hour to spend contemplating why red wine from Australia is so much better than from anywhere else in the world. And especially if it is from my beloved Margaret River or from my backyard, Perth’s Swan Valley.

You know how it is… every word that comes from the mouth of a guru should be followed without question… well in Masterson’s new book The Pledge, there are a number of pieces of advice which are just plan bull!!
When have you heard that a truly relaxing and healthy pursuit is time spent writing in a “cigar lounge”?? Geez hasn’t secondary smoking disease warnings got to Florida yet?? I might be really relaxed, pity about the lung cancer I got from inhaling your cigar smoke.

But the real dozy of Masterson’s advice is his impassioned plea to cut down your shower to 2 minutes!!

Hasn’t Michael heard that the world’s best thoughts appear whilst having a long relaxing warm shower?? Geez, you couldn’t get wet in under 2 minutes and surely you would still be smelly with that little water on your body.

Masterson recognises that this advice is not well received because when he has suggested it before in his writings the feedback received has been unanimously negative. So, it would seem to make his point about more strongly, he brings out the politically correct argument – shower less and save the planet!! Give me a break mate. Hasn’t he heard about the 2010 floods in Queensland, NSW and Western Australia. Is he seriously suggesting shorter showers will save us from the change in world climate…

I love it when we have these “the world is getting hotter” floods, the floods aren’t anywhere as bad as those we had 100 years ago… they even have a term for these events – “once in a 100 year flood.”

So, in my continuing search for better ways to do things, I am going to pass on having shorter showers… the time we have is too short to be worried about BO…

Read every day.

Originally published in Rebootology

Reading information that will increase your knowledge about your business or career will make you more valuable to colleagues, customers or clients.

Among wealthy people, 88 percent read 30 minutes or more every day. Just as important, they make good use of their reading time:

63 percent listen to audiobooks during their commute.
79 percent read educational career-related material.
55 percent read for personal development.
58 percent read biographies of successful people.
94 percent read current events.
51 percent read about history.
11 percent—only 11 percent—read purely for entertainment purposes.

The reason successful people read is to improve themselves.
This separates them from the competition. By increasing their knowledge, they are able to see more opportunities, which translate into more money. Comparatively speaking, only one in 50 of those struggling financially engages in this daily self-improvement reading, and as a result the poor don’t grow professionally and are among the first to be fired or downsized.

Not perfect AT FIRST

Originally published in Rebootology

Are you one of my readers who is going to check this issue of Reboot Your Life to see that I have correct spelling, correct grammar and punctuation? Maybe you are one of the people who write to me and correct my writing…

Do you know that your need to seek perfection is holding you back?

Is this you:

“When I retired in I had time to reflect on my career and how I could have made success come easier. My one complaint was that I felt I had worked too many hours to achieve it.
After considerable thought, I had a revelation: I was a diehard perfectionist and my perfectionism had doubled the time it took me to be successful!”

Do you treat perfection like a proud war veteran who had been awarded medals. The truth is, those "medals" were a millstone around his neck and were slowing him down.

I remember being challenged by James Newman, who had come to Australia in the mid eighties to present his seminar “Release Your Brakes” saying to be that:

“It doesn’t need to be perfect… at first!” and in that he gave me permission to be striving for perfection but at the same time being able to accept that 90% was often good enough if you “got it done!”

Is perfectionism keeping you from accomplishing your goals?

Have you ever said anything like:
"I must find the perfect gift for my sister's wedding."
"This report has to be perfect before I turn it in."
"I have to make sure my presentation is perfect before I meet with this client."

The sad truth is, nothing is perfect. Striving for perfection is foolish - and it's impossible to reach. So trying to make things perfect can prevent you from ever achieving the things you want to accomplish.

The other nasty thing about perfectionism is that it can stall you - keep you treading water instead of progressing. In other words, if you're always trying to make your novel perfect, you'll never get it published.

Keep in mind that you are a work in progress. So, too, are your goals... works in progress. If you never start on them... you can never benefit from the results.
Beating perfectionism is tough work. And sometimes the very thought that you aren't doing something "perfectly" can stop you in your tracks and stomp on your motivation.
Try This The Slump Buster
If you feel your energy level sliding, or if you are losing your motivation, here's a simple strategy that will help you get back in the game.
Maintain a list of small, meaningful tasks that need doing - things like replacing a light bulb, writing a letter, or returning a phone call. Take out your list when you feel a slump coming on and take care of one of those tasks. You will be out of your slump by the time you have completed it.
Why? Because you will have "stepped back" to catch your breath. Plus, accomplishing even small tasks is energizing.

Results are always good!

When I get those emails chastising me about my spelling, or grammar or punctuation I often reply by saying “They are deliberate errors – did you get the other 3??”

Interestingly, the people who read my emails the most thoroughly, and send me a list of my transgressions, rarely buy from me. I find that strange.

So can I suggest that you keep your perfectionism under control. Please keep in mind "the bigger picture,” and to push to move your goals forward. Can you make this your rule: 90 percent means good to go!

Don't waste time and energy striving for perfect. Do the best you can. Then take time later to fine-tune your work.

Power of Purpose

Originally published in Rebootology

Even though I live in Perth there is starting, ever so slowly, a felling that times are getting tougher. Each day as the price of petrol inches towards $2.00 a litre it seems that the good times have come to an end. [ $159.90 yesterday ]

Well I think we need a purpose to make us appreciate that times aren’t tough they are just different.

I can recall one of my first mentors, by way of books and audio programs was Zig Ziglar whose famous saying is: “You can have whatever you want in this world as long as you help enough people achieve whatever it is that they want.” I recall spending time with Zig and his wife “The Redhead” way back in the early 1980’s at Fremantle Fisherman’s Harbour and being inspired to make something of my life.

Zig passed at 85 a couple of years ago but not before he released his 25th book. His message is just as inspiring in “Better than Good” his greeting to people he meets and the title of his new book.

I have been reading about the Power of Purpose and the Power of One. And Zig had a way with words as he set out why it is a positive to feel that things could be better.

If you didn’t care it wouldn’t be worth going on.

Think about the awesome power of one person, who could just be you, who could change the way history unfolds. Here are a couple of examples:

In 1645, one vote gave Oliver Cromwell control of England
In 1776, one vote gave America the English language instead of German
In 1845, one vote saved President Andrew Johnson from impeachment
In 1875, on vote changed France from a monarchy to a republic
In 1942, one vote saved the Selective Service System just twelve weeks before Pearl Harbour was attacked

And unfortunately, in 1923 one vote gave Adolph Hitler control of the Nazi Party of Germany.

Combine this awesome Power of One with a Power of Purpose and you can achieve anything.

Be amazed what you can achieve.

Justin Herald started his Attitude Gear business when he was 25 years old, and never anticipated that it would grow to what it has today, with the brand being licensed by more then 20 companies throughout the world.

He readily admits that he didn’t know very much about business in those early days, so he would create his own way of doing things that kept everything as simple as possible. However, he thrived on a challenge, and when a store owner told him that there had been no demand for his gear to warrant him buying stock, Justin arranged for three of his friends to ring the store each week for the next four weeks asking about his clothing range. The owner eventually said that he was waiting for the rep to give him a call, so Justin realised the importance of trying to protect his brand, and set about trying to patent the word Attitude.

If you have ever been through the process of trying to patent a generic word such as attitude you will understand the resistance he experiences for the patents office. However after three years of persistence he finally succeeded. This master stroke is what has now propelled his business into world wide expansion as large corporations who were keen to break unto the youth market Attitude Gear was attracting have paid him millions of dollars to co-brand their products with the Attitude name.

When you believe that anything can be done – it’s amazing what you can achieve.

Can I recommend that if you need a mentor Justin has a fantastic program... let me know in the comments and I will put you in touch!

How do you tell the difference between a lack bear and a brown bear?

Originally published in Rebootology

I came across another example of this recently which I read of how a National Park in the USA got a very serious message across to their client in a light hearted way.

This is what the sign post said. In the light of the rising frequency of serious accidents between humans and black bears, the Montana Department of Fish & Game is advising hikers, hunters and fisherman to take extra precautions and keep alert for black bears while in the field. We advise that outdoorsmen should wear small noisy bells on the clothing as warning, so as not to unexpectantly startle bears.

We would also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of a close encounter with a bear. Additionally, it is a good idea to watch for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should be able to recognise the difference between black bear and its more ferocious cousin, the grizzly bear.

While the tracks for the two species of bear are quite similar, black bear dung is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. On the other hand, grizzly dung has little bells in it and it smells like pepper.

Success Leaves Clues

Delays in building and getting the business established meant that payments were required on the property before he had sold a single car. However, John pushed through these initial challenges and now sells more than 12,000 cars in a year, and employs hundreds of Western Australians in the process, making him one of Australia’s most successful car dealerships.

Did I say John goes to work every day and is in his early 80's!!

The List

One of the questions often asked by check out staff [ no self sever for us! ]when Joanne and I go shopping on a Saturday is "Have you got lots planned for the weekend?"
My stock answer is "I don't plan, I just follow Joanne's list!"
Well the list was long this weekend and I actually made it to the end... it was long because there is a council green waste pick up and we have a large [ by modern standards ] backyard which is a garden. we have trees to trim, roses to prune, hedges to thin and a reluctant olive tree, which refused to fruit, to remove and Joanne's tax return!
I made the mistake of starting the list on Sunday before having my after walk shower shave and sheeez... and when the olive tree finally admitted defeat it was dark and after the evening meal time... I think I finally had my "morning " shower at 7pm.
And fearing the worse, I started Joanne's tax, and if you haven't realised big brother is watching, have a look at what the tax department already fills in on your "prepopulate" tax return.... well it took less than 15 minutes and the list was DONE!! by 7.30 pm and Wayne was totally exhausted... but in the corner Joanne was already working on this weekends list!

What are you waiting for

One of the reasons I hear why people haven't done what they want to do is that they don't have the money...

Want to share something with you - money magically appears when you expect it to... currently I am a single person operator with some help from a couple of outsource people and the money seems to run out before the month... it always did.

I think back to say 2005 when I had 20 staff [ $20 k a week wage bill ] an office in the CBD [ $5000 a month in outgoings - car parking etc ] a newer car with a lease { $1000 a month - same car now worth zilch but the lease is Zilch ] plus other shit and holidays... you know what, the money used to run out before the month but the numbers were different it was $30 k a week just to open the door... now with everything cut down I still feel the same angst as the $$$'s take their time to arrive - yet the holiday is still planned [ cruising the med in September ] but yesterday the travel agent said you passport runs out exactly 6 monhs from when you get home... and we think you should play safe and get a new one... my mind shifted to scarcity mode and after checking how much a new passport would cost [ $282 thank you very much ] I wondered "where will I find another $282 for that!

As Paulo Coelho says: "DO IT NOW" it might be too late later!

Privacy matters

Originally published in Rebootology

I do not answer any call that says "Number withheld" or anything similar. With all the scams around - buying Apple Store iTunes Cards at Coles to pay the Tax Department - someone must be doing that if you read the Scam alert signs at Coles and Woollies....

One of my pet hates is when someone rings and they start by saying "to protect your privacy I need to identify you!" and I hang up... so it is easier not to answer in the first place.

I liked this saying "I will protect your privacy by not answering phone calls with the "Number withheld""

What do you think??

10000 Steps is a con!

Originally published in Rebootology

I do on 5 days a week 10 kilometres of walking and have felt good about it... but on the "rush" days when things need to be done early I only do a 20 minutes walk to and from my Coffee Office and I have been feeling bad about that! [ Self critique is worse than public! ]
Well I just happened to catch Michel Moseley's Show on Getting Fit and he helped me feel better about myself... firstly, where did 10000 steps come from:
"... where did that figure come from?
You might be surprised to hear it was the result of a 1960s marketing campaign in Japan.
In the run-up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, a company came up with a device which they started marketing to the health-conscious.
It was called a Manpo-Kei. In Japanese, "man" means 10,000, "po" means steps and "kei" means meter. So it was, literally, a 10,000 steps meter."
So, after 10000 steps it reset. Hench, your goal should be to do 10,000 steps. Science caught up and said that people who did 10000 steps got healthier than people who didn't... doooh. Recent science says the ideal number is 13,000 [ Hence my 10 kilometre walk 5 days a week. ]
Moseley's program found that even with good intentiona 10000 steps is sometimes difficult to fit in and he and scientists tested the health benefits of a brisk 10 minute walk 3 times a day.
The brisk short walk had the same or better results as the 10000 steps and people found it easier to fit it into their schedule - before and after work and during a meal break.
I feel so much better now on my short walk days - I have just speed up and do a brisk walk for up to 20 minutes each way. It is only 5000 steps but it feels so much better!
So, a long walk is out of the question?? Just do a 10 minute walk at a faster than normal pace [ how fast?? Get the sweat running and that is fast enough ]

What is your Octopus's Garden?

Originally published in Rebootology

Yesterday I had coffee with a Busselton based colleague and old Busselton High mate Peter Strain. our conversation was about the commercialisation of his art - he is a photographer of exquisite skill and he captures the world in miniature - or should I say, the miniature bits of the world or those things in their own world like the seabed near the Busselton Jetty.
He chats to me for advice on marketing and I end up frustrated because he won't change his "hat" to that of a marketer and ask "What pain can I solve for Mr Whoever [ or Mrs or Miss or Non Gender specific " with my art.."
Peter believes we will see the beauty in what he does and money will come - however, unless you are like a Ken Done, artists get rich after they die.
Anyway we enjoyed the coffee and parted - Peter in confidence that someone will recognise his amazing talent and help him share it with the world... I don't know how I can help unless someone helps me bridge that gap from Crass commercialism and art.
Any suggestions are welcome. Peter has never "rebooted" his art has endured for decades and new technology [ lasers and drones ] are helping him bring his work to the 21st Century.

Activity gets results but not necessarily from the activity!

I have been chatting a lot lately with a mate who believes believing gets it done... well I am into that mindset too... I have been doing stuff believing the results will come... and they usually do - good or bad.
So, the secret is to continue to do... but a word of caution..
Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result!
so doing is necessary but maybe do something on the edge of your comfort zone... #WayneMansfield #Rebootology #BusinessSeminarsAustralia

Bucket List - What Haven't You Ticked Off?

In my early 20's I remember my mum passing from a stroke at the young age of 56... and she and dad were going to do lots of stuff when they retired... mum didn't make it and she left a long long list... dad survived her but before he could do his bucket lis the dreaded Alzheimers claimed his mind and ill health his body 15 years later - again nothing on that bucket list got down... Unfortunately, history is repeating as my eldest brother is fighting the fight of his life against Alzheimers and in a discussion with my sister in law she lamented that good card was hard to get because of our ageing population... she and my brother had provided for their golden years where they would do their "Bucket List" but fate had claimed it from them... she said it is terrible to see him like this when we have so much money in the bank! I was discussing this with a mate and he said: "I wonder how many people have deferred crossing stuff off their bucket list and have left it to later" And it came to me that Rebootology will solve the problem of "Did you forget to tick it off your Bucket List" Joanne [ she who must be obeyed ] told someone who asked when she was retiring and getting started on her bucket list... she answered: "There is nothing I haven't done - I suppose I could add somethings but seriously we have done everything we want to do and I work because I like it." And as I shared the benefits of Rebootology I have been copping some blow back " You are just big noting" "This is all about you." etc and I pulled my head in... but after visiting my brother on Sunday at the hospital where he and others were "parked" until care spaces opened up I stopped feeling like it was about me and more about them not doing what would have fulfilled their life.
I hope you can see that joining me on the Reboot journey will enhance your life now and in the future... even Richard Branson agrees! #WayneMansfield #Rebootology #BusinessSeminarsAustralia

Why can't we just celebrate the rescue?

Last week in Thailand an unusual event happened... nationalities and egos combined to save 13 people stuck in a cave... but no sooner had the cheers quietened than the naysayers started barking.
In the past they wouldn't have had a platform but Facebook and Twitter allowed people to whinge about why they were in the cave, the recklessness of the coach, the audacity of Elon Musk and on and on it went...
No pause to celebrate the rescue and the honour the brave Thai diver who perished... do the main stream media so like blood and gore that without it they have lost the art of GOOD news...
I think society has gone to far with celebrating the cult of Self Esteem and No responsibility and unfortunately anyone can do and say what they think.
It is time to take back our true selves... be part of Rebootology and also in business consider coming to the new management series of Business Seminars Australia. #WayneMansfield #Rebootology #BusinessSeminarsAustralia

The new Elite - Are you a shoe girl

Are you a shoe GIRL

The New elite?
I was listening to Robert Kiyosaki podcast and he had a guest talking about how "we" had stuffed up the economy.
The basic idea was that 40 years ago schools started giving out scholarships to very bright disadvantaged kids... the brightest of the bright without funds... and they did exceptionally well. And now because they did well they are the elite - used to being given a free ride and now earning exceptional income and the problem is their entitled kids.
With these exceptionally bright University educated people [ Obama Clinton Bob Hawke etc ] rising to power we have become a knowledge society where money is made in the financial markets of the world and not by building things.
The idea put was that we needed to get back to rewarding making things...
It made me think about political correctness where people are allowed to be offended for other people even when the other people are not necessarily offended. My example is asking a lady if "are you a shoe girl" which those who are agree and those who want to be offended become offended by the sexist language,
